I don't even know what sudo is and I still find this funny. That's the problem with geeks is that in extreme cases they have no common sense.

(I personally have some common sense, even if it is only a little.)

Anyway, cute comic. I found it from xkcd.

Webcomic in Flash form ... what a terrible, horrible idea. You won't get very many readers this way.

Note: I am not commenting on the content of the comics, but the presentation format. I don't have Flash installed on my home computer (but I do at work, where I am now) so I will never be able to see these from home. Plus, it requires interaction from the reader simply to view the comic: makings for poor user interface and bad experience.

This is one of the classic examples of Flash abuse, along with splash pages and online food ordering menus (I am looking at you Pizza Hut!)

Anyway, to be less negative: not too bad of a comic. Thanks!

Mauro

Anonymous: Flash Player gets around 4 millon downloads per DAY. Everybody use it (even YouTube requires Flash). So, You really need to update your home PC.

Yeah and a thousand flies around the dung pile are truly a proof that dung is good for everything.

Flash isn't even available on all platforms people use(e.g. Linux/PPC), images on the other hand work for everyone who wants to see comics. Also, since you're aiming for the geekier sect of people(the ones who usually hate flash), using flash is a very very _very_ bad idea.

Mauro

Anonymous: again, the flash player do work on every single platform. And, btw, saying that Flash is bad in itself is just plain ignorance.

Anonymous

(Anonymous #2 was not Anonymous #1. This is Anonymous #1 speaking again)

No, Flash is not available on "every platform". Can you find me a Flash player for an IRIX system? How about GNU/Linux on PPC? OpenBSD on anything? Adobe doesn't provide such binaries.

Of course, people running these systems generally don't want to install Flash anyway. I choose not to myself because it's proprietary and installing it takes away my freedom (I can't modify it, study it, share it, etc.).

A nice thing about not having Flash is that most advertisements are gone without even getting into the ethics of ad-blocking. Advertisers block themselves out.

I would argue that about 99% of the use of Flash is a mistake. Some uses put Flash to good use (think YouTube, or those little Flash-based online arcane-style mini-games), but most are just a hassle and make for terrible, broken user interfaces (like splash welcome webpages or annoying advertising).

Mauro

I don't use Flash for advertising nor annoying animations; I just use it as a tool who makes people interact with the comic, and also solves the problem with space that most convencional comics has.

I like the presentation, it doesnt take away the surprise of the punchline

@ Chiya

kxcd #149 is my favorite too.

"make" is a command in *nix to automatically build a program. In this case the program would be the sandwich.

Sudo is a *nix command which allows users to run programs or commands as other users (usually the admin). It's also used for temporary privilege escalation.

See how funny it is now!?

"I choose not to myself because it's proprietary and installing it takes away my freedom (I can't modify it, study it, share it, etc.)."

That explains it all. So you are an open-source extremist fundamentalist.

Anonymous

I hate Linux users for their arrogance! I may be generalizing but all the Linux users I know seem to talk down to ppl who use anything else! Why do you care if I use proprietary software! It's my freedom to choose anyway!

Yert

Most of the people I hear talking about how "good" Linux is generally don't know what sudo is.

Anonymous

Heh, stupid Windows users. Such geeks. Those *nix users though - man, those guys sure are cool!

Anonymous

sudo is a computer term for super user do, among other acronyms. It allows regular users to have temporary admin powers. In the comic when he says sudo make me a sandwich, its joking that he temporarily had admin power over his girlfriend to make her make him a sandwich.

I'm a windows user, never Linux and never Mac. Not cause I have anything against them but because Windows works, and I see no reason to go through the trouble of installing Linux when I don't know how, and I have no use for a Mac that a Windows can't also do. Getting XKCD jokes though isn't hard. If you don't get the joke, use wikipedia or http://justfuckinggoogleit.com/

XKCD is probably the worst comic ever and the whole flash discussion on here should be made into a webcomic as it made me grin - which is more that XKCD has ever done *facepalms*

Anonymous

Hi, I'm a Linux user that refuses to use Adobe Flash as well due to its non-free nature. However, I would like to say that Swfdec 0.8.2 (a free Flash implementation that *gasp* actually works with PulseAudio) does indeed work fine for this comic.

Anonymous

Are you kidding me? XKCD is the most clever webcomic there is. And what do you read, Cyanide and Happiness? Pfft.

This is great!
..i wish i could print it out

While I have nothing (or very little) against Flash I do agree with Anonymous #1 that it seems kinda overkill to use it to show a series of images. But, hey, whatever floats your boat (or whatever lifts your luggage, as it were).

A snobby snooty Mac and *nix user.

PS: My main concern with Flash is it's resource use. Even small simple Flash games can bring my CPU (generally they only use 1) to its knees. That's not the case with this comic here.

Hey, comments like “LOL” or “Sucks” are welcome, but I much prefer the ones who actually discuss the topic of the comic :) Using your name is better than anonymity too.
